How to Prompt Any AI Model Like You Actually Know What You’re Doing

You typed something into an AI chatbot. You got something back. And what you got was… fine. A little generic. The kind of answer that could have appeared on basically any website about basically any topic.

That’s usually not the AI’s fault. It’s a prompting problem.

The gap between people who get mediocre AI output and people who get genuinely useful results almost always comes down to one thing: how they phrase the request. Not which model they use. Not what they pay. Just how they ask.

This guide gives you a system that works across every major language model, whether you’re using Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama, or something that launched last Tuesday. The techniques are the same because all these models respond to the same things: clarity, context, and well-defined constraints.

Follow the steps in order. By the end you’ll have a framework you can use for pretty much anything.

Step 1: Stop Being Vague

Bad AI output can almost always be traced back to a vague request. The model isn’t confused. It’s working with what you gave it, and you gave it almost nothing to work with.

The problem

Most people prompt like they’re texting a friend who already knows everything about their life. “Help me with my presentation.” Which presentation? For whom? About what? What tone? The AI doesn’t know any of this, so it guesses. And guessing gives you generic.

The fix

Make sure your prompt answers four questions before the AI needs to guess anything:

  • What’s the task? Be literal. “Write,” “Analyze,” “Compare,” “Summarize.”
  • What’s the context? Who’s the audience? What do they already know? What’s the goal?
  • What’s the format? Bullet points, paragraph, table, numbered list, email, code?
  • What are the constraints? Word count, tone, what to include, what to leave out.

Try it

Take this prompt:

Tell me about climate change.

And compare it to this one:

Summarize the three biggest causes of climate change for a high school student writing a research paper. Plain language, no jargon. Under 200 words. Numbered list with one sentence of explanation per item.

Same topic, completely different output. The second version gives the model something specific to deliver, instead of an open field to wander through.

Step 2: Give the AI a Role

Language models respond differently depending on who you tell them to be. It might sound like a gimmick, but it actually changes which patterns the model draws from.

Why it works

When you say “act as a nutritionist,” the model shifts toward health-related knowledge and uses more precise language. Role assignment is basically a shortcut for loading an entire context package in one sentence.

The formula

You are a [specific role] with [relevant experience]. Your audience is [who they are]. Your goal is [what the output should achieve].

Examples

You are a senior copywriter at a direct-response agency. Write three subject lines for a cold email selling project management software to CTOs at mid-size companies. Each subject line should be under 8 words and create urgency without sounding spammy.
You are an experienced hiring manager in tech. Review this cover letter and tell me three specific things that would make you put it in the "no" pile. Be blunt.

The role does a lot of the work for you. You’re not just saying what you want, you’re also setting the perspective and the quality bar.

Step 3: Show What You Want (Few-Shot Prompting)

If you want the AI to match a particular style or pattern, showing is much more effective than describing.

How it works

You include a couple of examples of the output you want, right in the prompt. The model picks up the pattern and builds on it. Two examples is usually enough. Three is plenty.

Try it

Write short product descriptions in this style:

Example 1: "Ceramic mug. Holds 12 oz of whatever's keeping you alive this morning. Dishwasher safe. Microwave safe. Existential-crisis resistant."

Example 2: "Canvas tote. Fits a laptop, three books, and your denial about how much stuff you carry everywhere. Reinforced straps."

Now write one for: A bamboo phone stand.

The model picks up more than the format. It catches the tone, the rhythm, the humor. It’s surprising how little it takes.

Step 4: Ask the AI to Think Step by Step

For anything involving reasoning, whether it’s math, analysis, strategy, or debugging, it helps to ask the model to show its work.

Why it helps

Language models don’t actually think. They predict the next word. But when you force them to write out intermediate steps, each step becomes context for the next prediction. The result is noticeably more accurate, especially on complex problems. The technique is called chain-of-thought prompting and it’s one of the most effective ones out there.

What it looks like

A company's revenue grew 15% in Q1, dropped 8% in Q2, grew 22% in Q3, and dropped 3% in Q4. Starting revenue was $2 million.

Calculate the final annual revenue. Show each quarter's calculation step by step before giving the final number.

Without “step by step,” the model tends to jump straight to an answer and get it wrong. With it, each step acts as a check on the one before.

Rule of thumb

If a smart person would need to scribble on paper before answering, add “think step by step” to your prompt.

Step 5: Let the AI Ask You Questions First

Most people skip this one, and that’s a shame, because it might be the most useful technique on the entire list.

The problem it solves

When you ask a model to “write a marketing plan,” you’re forcing it to guess at everything from your budget to your audience to your timeline. It has nothing to go on, so you end up with something that looks like a plan but is really just a generic template.

The fix

Flip it around. Tell the model to ask you questions before it produces anything.

I need a 90-day content strategy for my business. Before you create anything, ask me 5 questions about my audience, goals, resources, and channels. Build the strategy after I answer.

Now the model gathers what it needs instead of making it up. The output goes from “generic template” to something that actually fits your situation.

Even better with a role

Combine it with role assignment:

You are a senior product manager with experience launching SaaS products. I'm about to describe a feature I want to build. Before you give me any advice, ask me 5 questions that would help you make a better recommendation. Focus on user need, business impact, and technical feasibility.

Step 6: Set Clear Constraints

AI models are wordy by default. Without constraints, they’ll give you 500 words when 50 would do. Constraints aren’t about limiting the output, they’re about giving the model a clear target to hit.

Constraints that work

  • Length: “100 words max” or “No more than 3 bullet points”
  • Format: “Table with columns for Pros, Cons, and Verdict”
  • Scope: “Only the financial implications, skip everything else”
  • Evaluation: “Rate each option from 1 to 10 and explain your score in one sentence”
  • Exclusion: “No generic advice. Every recommendation must be specific to this scenario.”

Stack them together

Compare three email marketing platforms for a solo creator with under 5,000 subscribers. Table with columns: Platform, Best For, Biggest Limitation, Monthly Cost. Keep the whole response under 150 words. Don't include platforms that require annual billing.

Three constraints in one prompt. The output comes out tight and easy to scan, because you gave the model something to stay inside of.

Step 7: Build on What You Have Instead of Starting Over

The most common prompting mistake isn’t writing a bad first prompt. It’s throwing away the first response and starting from scratch instead of working with what’s already there.

Why iteration works

Modern language models have large context windows. Claude handles up to 1 million tokens, Gemini 3 Pro goes to 2 million, and GPT-5.4 reaches 1 million via the API. That means the model remembers your entire conversation. Use that.

Instead of starting fresh, adjust what’s already there:

Good start, but the tone is too stiff. Rewrite the second section like you're explaining it to a coworker over lunch. Keep the numbers but drop the corporate language.
The first three points are good. Cut points 4 and 5, they're too obvious. Add two more that would surprise someone who already knows the basics.

Three rounds of refinement almost always produce better results than three separate prompts on the same topic.

Step 8: Set Up Persistent Instructions

If you’re typing the same context and preferences at the start of every conversation, you’re wasting time. Most AI platforms let you save persistent instructions that automatically apply to every new chat.

Where to find it

Claude calls it “custom instructions” and “projects.” GPT calls it “custom instructions” and “GPTs.” Gemini calls it “Gems.” The principle is the same everywhere: you write a context block once and it loads automatically.

A template that works

Role: You are a direct, experienced [your field] advisor.
Audience: I'm a [your level] professional working in [your industry].
Tone: Clear, conversational, no filler. Skip motivational platitudes.
Format defaults: Bullet points for lists. Tables for comparisons. Under 300 words unless I ask for more.
Always: Ask clarifying questions before tackling complex requests.
Never: Start with "Great question!" or "I'd be happy to help with that."

Set it up once. Done.

Step 9: Five Traps Worth Knowing About

Even with solid technique, a few common mistakes can quietly ruin your results.

Trap 1: The kitchen-sink prompt. Five different tasks crammed into one prompt forces the model to juggle too much at once. Break it into a sequence instead: outline first, then expand, then polish.

Trap 2: Leading questions. “Why is remote work better than office work?” tells the model what the conclusion should be. Use neutral framing: “Compare the productivity effects of remote work and office work, with arguments from both sides.”

Trap 3: Trusting the first answer. Language models always sound confident, even when they’re wrong. For anything factual, like dates, statistics, or claims about specific products, check the output yourself. The model is a starting point, not a source of truth.

Trap 4: Ignoring what you got. When the output misses the mark, don’t just write a new prompt. Figure out what went wrong. Was the context missing? Were the constraints too loose? Was the format unclear? Fix the actual problem.

Trap 5: Treating every model the same. The core principles are universal, but models have their own tendencies. Claude is typically thorough and careful. GPT is versatile and conversational. Gemini likes structure and markdown. It pays to learn the one you use most.

Checklist

Run through this before you send a prompt:

  • Have I said what the task is, who it’s for, what format I want, and what the constraints are?
  • Does the task need expertise? Give the model a role.
  • Do I need a specific style? Show an example or two.
  • Does the task involve logic or calculation? Ask for step-by-step.
  • Is the task complex? Let the model ask questions first.
  • Have I set limits on length, scope, and format?
  • Am I building on the response, or starting over every time?
  • Have I checked the factual claims?

After a week or two it becomes second nature.

One last thing

The models will keep getting better. Context windows are already measured in millions of tokens. New models show up every month. But the people who get the most out of AI going forward won’t necessarily be the ones using the latest thing. It’ll be the ones who learned to communicate clearly with whatever they have. That skill compounds over time. Start with step 1 on your next prompt and work your way down. You’ll notice the difference pretty quickly.
